Preparing for the Storm
A major winter storm is expected to hit andamp lt a href andamp quot http www kxnet com t north-dakotaandamp quot class andamp quot kxInlineLinkandamp quot andamp gt North Dakotaandamp lt aandamp gt this weekend with near blizzard conditions and deadly wind chills Weather like this can be some of the hardest weather to handle especially if the power is knocked out and the roads are filled in Tonight andamp lt a href andamp quot http www kxnet com t shaun-sipmaandamp quot class andamp quot kxInlineLinkandamp quot andamp gt Shaun Sipmaandamp lt aandamp gt reports on what it means to be ready if mother nature hits us with the worst Winter Weather in North Dakota can be brutal At it s worst it can be deadly Being ready for the worst means more than just a winter survival kit in a car it means having your home ready in case the power goes out Al Reynolds andamp lt a href andamp quot http www kxnet com t ward-county-ndandamp quot class andamp quot kxInlineLinkandamp quot andamp gt Ward Countyandamp lt aandamp gt Emergency Manager andamp quot That s one of our biggest fears locally Ward County Emergency Manager Al Reynolds says the local power companies are quick to respond to power outages but there have been instances in the not too distance past where mother nature was simple too much Al Reynolds Ward County Emergency Manager andamp quot Which is what happened in 2005 when we had the snow disaster Tree limbs came down and normally when you get that heavy of snow it s warmer outside and that s what s what happened we got lucky that time Becuase we had 600 to 800 people without power for two or three days Reynolds says if it had been colder like what s being forecast for this weekend there would have been a real problem Because of that Emergency managers everywhere urge everyone to be ready for the worst case scenario Al Reynolds Ward County Emergency Manager andamp quot Have a kit in your home and that is have two or three days of food Have a gallon of water per person per day on hand At least that much Another thing is if possible have an alternate source of heat Reynolds says says that could be anything from a fireplace to space heaters that don t use electricity But with that ventilation is critical and have carbon monixide detectors in your house Or Reynolds says a backup generation can be utilized to run your furance while the main power is out Al Reynolds Ward County Emergency Manager andamp quot A lot of people have their houses wired so they can plug a generator into the ouside of the house Then they have a few outlets that work Mitch Craft Acme Electric andamp quot Le ts say you want to leave your lights on and want the furnace to run then you woudln t need a whole home backup system Craft says work would need to be done before hand by an electician A typicall 3000 watt generator will run between 8 and 12 hours depending on how much electricity you re using Mitch Craft Acme Electric You can get a load tester to find out the amperate or watts you re going to draw to find out how much of a generator you ll need The issue many people run into is they don t think about being ready until it s too late and the storm is already on top of them Having plans in place means whether the storm and not having to make quick rash decisions when the elements are at their worst

DuWayne Hendrickson
Election day is tomorrow and today we hear from one final candidate on the statewide ballot for Governor Independent candidate DuWayne Hendrickson of Minot Hello I am DuWayne Hendrickson Independent candidate for Governor of North Dakota I would like to thank the KX Network and the citizens of North Dakota for this opportunity to express my views My wife of 29 years and I have been lifelong North Dakota residents and have had the opportunity to raise our four children in this great state We are proud to be residents of North Dakota Having family members in occupations ranging from Agriculture to the energy industry education to financial services as well as being a former small business owner I feel that I have a strong perspective on the opportunities and threats facing North Dakota s citizens and businesses One of the biggest issues in North Dakota is our increasingly high property tax With local education being as much as 50 or more of our property tax I would propose legislation to increase state funding of education to alleviate the property tax burden on our state s home owners As a state we have to ensure that our residents and prospective residents can afford to purchase a home or stay in their current home We also have to encourage local governments to become more fiscally responsible to lessen their burden on property tax We also have to get our state budget under control It took North Dakota over 100 years to reach a 1 billion dollar budget but has almost doubled under the current administration As Governor I would ensure that the state is only spending money in a fiscally responsible way that adds value to North Dakotas current and future residents If we do not control our costs now we will leave North Dakota in worse financial shape for future generations and make it more difficult for them to prosper As governor I would promote spending on infrastructure and improving the incentives for small businesses in our rural communities We are currently facing many obstacles with our rural infrastructure regarding roads and utility access for our oil industry and growing communities We also need to look at increasing other sources of alternative energy sources such as wind bio-fuels and coal as well as improving our ability to transport that energy to more communities and states to increase revenue for North Dakota We are also fortunate that in these difficult financial times that North Dakota has a substantial budget surplus As Governor I will provide a disciplined approach for investing this surplus in a way that benefits the current North Dakota residents and makes us attractive to prospective residents and employers I will also dedicate some of this surplus to improve our education system by improving teacher wages to keep our highly qualified teachers in our state I will also commit to controlling our education spending in a way that allows us to provide a high level of education across all communities in this great state which will allow all of the children of North Dakota the opportunity for a quality education The more we can invest in our children today the greater their contribution to the success of this state will be in the future The future of our state depends on many different areas of concern However our number one priority needs to be investing in our state in a way that encourages entrepreneurship job creation increased wages and a diverse economy And while I may not have all the answers to all the concerns facing North Dakota today and in the future I will devote my time to working with all areas of state county and local governments to provide the best possible future for our state For more information about me and my vision for North Dakota please visit my website www hendricksonforgovernor com Again thanks for your time it is greatly appreciated and I hope to be speaking to you from the Governors office in the future A vote for Hendrickson on November 4th is a vote for building a better ND

Mathern Message
We are offering four minutes of unedited time in our newscasts to the major candidates for governor and US Congress Yesterday we heard from Governor John Hoeven Now it s his challenger s turn Here s Democrat candidate for governor Tim Mathern I thank KX for giving me this opportunity to speak to you today I am running for Governor because I know the potential of this great state I know that it can grow and flourish so much more than it has under the current governor Sure the state is benefiting from high oil and grain prices But middle class families are struggling with the rising cost of gas groceries and health care I understand their struggle At the same time corporate special interests and wealthy donors have benefited from having a friend in the governor s office For the last eight years home property taxes have gone up almost 50 while other tax dollars have been stockpiled into a billion dollar surplus Local communities have been forced to raise property taxes to pay for things like education roads and bridges That s poor fiscal management I have the skills and experience to do better After 8 years North Dakota continues to lose population Our educated young folks leave and rural communities are in decline My roots are in Edgeley North Dakota where I grew up with 12 brothers and sisters We had to work 7 days a week or we weren t going to make it The values I grew up with of hard work and helping others are the values I bring to my work every day I have been a state senator for over two decades And as a social worker case manager and administrator I have also worked to improve the lives of children and families of all ages Now I want to bring my experience to the governor s office to help build up this great state Here are some things a Mathern administration will do First I know many of you are concerned about taxes My middle class tax cut plan offers income and property tax relief to the families that need it most Governor Hoeven s plan cuts taxes for the wealthiest North Dakotans and out of state corporations who need it the least My plan also includes increased funding for education and repairs for roads and bridges which will help reduce property taxes further The governor has sat back and watched the rural areas of North Dakota empty out He talks about the problem but does nothing about it A Mathern administration will do two things to give young people a reason to stay First college students will get full reimbursement for their tuition costs if they stay and work in the state for 8 years after graduating But they won t stay if they don t have good jobs For example the governor doesn t realize that almost every state around us is doing so much more to turn their natural resources into energy and profits than we are North Dakota has the most wind of any state in the country We should be harnessing it to help drive the engine of our rural economies And local communities rather than outside corporations should control the profits Minnesota with a third of our wind is already producing over twice as much wind energy as we are The governor has been virtually silent on the spiraling cost of health care He talks about the need to make health care affordable but he does nothing about it And he mocks me for saying that I will make sure that everyone in the state has access to affordable health insurance and affordable health care beginning with our children Friends you have a real choice between john Hoeven and me I am offering real plans for tax relief for health care reform and renewable energy which is the key to revitalizing our rural communities A Mathern administration will set higher goals to achieve a healthy and brighter future I want to roll up my sleeves and get started Thank you for listening Next Tuesday and Wednesday we ll hear extended messages from the candidates for US Congress - Democrat incumbent Earl Pomeroy and Republican challenger Duane Sand

Oil Boom Means High Electricity Demand
The growth in oil exploration in eastern Montana and western North Dakota has meant a big influx of money to the region But it s also meant a big increase in many other things - including the demand for water electricity and workers At Mountrail-Williams Electric Coop the Bakken oil boom has meant more work to meet the demand for more power As Jim Olson reports the cooperative is more than tripling its capacity to keep the lights on Jim Olson KX News When Dale Haugen surveys the site of an 8-million dollar addition to his electric cooperative s system he gets fired up about the oil exploration related to the Baaken Formation oil reserves in the region Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric It s Rockin the Bakken Jim Olson KX News Moving inside his truck to avoid the North Dakota wind Haugen reiterated his enthusiasm for the oil boom Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric This substation will have all of the relaying the protection equipment everything required to serve the whole county It ll be designed that we re going to split the county in two - there ll be a north half and a south half - and it will give us the isolation required if we have problems in the future This is the beginning of where it all starts Jim Olson KX News It all starts at this 8-million dollar substation at Belden - to be supplied by an 8-million dollar power line that will bring a new power supply to the heart of Mountrail County Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric Previously our limitation was 18 megawatts This will get us up to 65 megawatts plus Jim Olson KX News By more than tripling the capacity of the Mountrail-Williams system the cooperative will be ready to meet the growing need for power at well site after well site Haugen says there are 32 wells in the coop s service area - each moving to a new site every month or so Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric Every 30 days they complete a well That means 32 additional wells every month coming in to request electrical service Jim Olson KX News And all the work has meant a big increase in the workforce for the cooperative The 45 original workers have become supervisors Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric We ve taken all of our existing linemen and made them line foremen They work with contractors line up material and everything else Right now we have 124 contract workers today They come from Wyoming Colorado Rapid City South Dakota Wisconsin Minnesota Jim Olson KX News Haugen says it s a great opportunity for the employees - and for the members of the cooperative since the influx of business has allowed the company to make many needed upgrades to the system without longtime members having to pay the entire bill You re behind this Rockin the Bakken thing Dale Haugen Mountrail-Williams Electric It s pretty exciting when it happens I just want Mountrail-Williams to be part of that Rockin the Bakken We re going to hang in there with them In Belden Jim Olson KX News Haugen says the new power line and substation should be finished by early November just in time for the company s peak demand season - winter
