EQIP Program Helping Producers

Improving the environment while improving your operation Tonight Reporter Sarah Gustin takes us out to the pasture to show us how one program is helping one producer make some big changes Not having water in your pasture is not an an option So if you have to pay to get water to the pasture why pay for all of itwhen you can pay for half Jack Spah EQIP Program Well I can just keep on watering Water is always a factor My windmill could never keep up and whenever I would go down to check on it I could never depend on it That is the biggest factor right there is going to be a piece of mind Stewart Blotter Resource Conservationist You want water we are willing to provide water for you and give you some money to put it in but we want something in return Generally what we get in return in the grazing system We are looking at the resource out there and we want to benefit the resource And by doing that putting water out there we will have more uniform grazing on that pasture we will get a grazing system on other pastures The Environmental Quality Incentives Program-better known as EQIPhas been helping producers make natural resource improvements on their operations for years on a 50 percent cost share basis And it s that time of year when are applications are coming due-for those producers wanting to make their own operations a little more environmental friendly Stewart Blotter Resource Conservationist We provide techinical assistance year round to anybody who wishes to have it So we will go out and work with an individual like Jack and we actually work up ideas We are like another set of eyes and ears on his land so we look for opportunities to help Jack with his production Spah started last year with one project in the EQIP program That one idea sparked into three projects including cross fencing digging new wells and grass seeding His most recent addition is a new well in the yardthat pumps water to three different pastures Jack Spah EQIP Program User I know the system works I have seen the progress and I have also heard to like in my other pasture where we do the cell grazing I see like a 50 pound weight gain on the calves alone And your calves putting more dollars in your pocketmight be reason look at taking part in the program Near Tuttle Reporting for KX News I am Sarah Gustin If you are interested in learning more about the EQIP program and some of the funding that is available you can contact your local NRCS office Applications for 2009 are due October 15

Windmills for New York City?

Mayor Bloomberg Wants Windmills Placed on City Bridges and Skyscrapers Also Offshore

Mathern Touts Wind Potential

It was a windy day across North Dakota - the perfect time for the man who wants to unseat Governor John Hoeven to talk about wind energy Democrat Tim Mathern says the state should be producing at least 10-thousand megawatts of wind power within 12 years That would be a 30-fold increase from the current wind production in North Dakota and more than six times the level proposed by a commission appointed by Republican Governor John Hoeven Mathern held press conferences in Fargo Bismarck and Grand Forks to say Hoeven is not ambitious enough in setting energy production goals for the state And the Democrat says the governor has not done enough to increase the capacity of transmission lines in the state to move wind-produced electricity Tim Mathern D - Gov Candidate right now our country is building the super highway of electrical transmission ND is not on that super highway Our Governor has not worked with other states to position this super highway and if we re not aggressive that super highway is going to go right past us Mathern is also proposing a new state office of renewable power Meanwhile a spokesman for Governor Hoeven says Mathern is behind the curve on the energy question saying the governor has worked with the legislature to establish a transmission authority to deal with electricity transmission issues The spokesman also says Hoeven is considered a leader among the nation s governors when it comes to energy policy

Mathern's Wind Energy Plan

The Democratic Candidate for Governor says wind can help reverse the deline of rural North Dakota Tim Mathern today reveals his wind energy plan Which would expand wind energy in our state Mathern says North Dakota has twice the wind that Minnesota has but Minnesota is developing three times as much wind Mathern says the state should be producing at least 10 thousand megawatts of wind power by 2020 The state is now generates 345 megawatts Mathern says his biggest concern is that the state is lacking transmission lines to get wind power to other states He says Hoeven hasn t been aggressive enough in solving the transmission problem Tim Mathern D - Gov Candidate right now our country is building the super highway of electrical transmission ND is not on that super highway Our Governor has not worked with other states to position this super highway and if we re not aggressive that super highway is going to go right past us Governor John Hoeven s campaign manager Don Larson say Hoeven has been a proven leader on energy development Larson countered all of Mathern s arguements with ways Hoeven has made improvements in wind energy since taking office For one Hoeven has established a transmission authority to focus on the transmission of wind power

Wind Debate

Democratic Candidate for Governor Tim Mathern says North Dakota needs to be producing more wind power Mathern says incumbent Republican Governor John Hoeven hasn t been ambitious enough in setting wind power goals He says North Dakota has twice the wind as Minnesota but Minnesota has triple the amount of wind turbines If elected Mathern says he will have 10 thousand mega watts of wind electricty by 2020 The state now generates about 345 megawatts Mathern says Governor Hoeven hasn t addressed the problem the state currently has of getting the wind electricty out of state He has a plan to target that In addition Mathern says more of the profits from wind need to stay in North Dakota Tim Mathern D Gov Candidate Mathern is also proposing a new state office of renewable power He says putting someone in charge of promoting the industry would help it develop more quickly

Kids and Wind Power

You can t see it touch it or smell it And yet its power is worth studying at least to a teaching consultant from the Twin Cities Debbie Kuehn tells us why so many teachers want to hear what Michael Arquin has to say What do you get When you hand a bunch of science teachers some pvc pipe and a cutter Aside from an entertaining way to spend the afternoon you get a great hands-on lesson in wind energy JoAnn Schapp Bishop Ryan HS-I think a lot of the prep work is going to be teacher-driven at my age level I think it s going to be some neat activities to do when the kids come back to the classroom Meet Michael Arquin a man who dreams of saving the enviroment one kid at a time Mike Arquin KidWind-I m pretty a wind geek is what you could call me I was teaching a lot of this in my classroom and this was a hobby KidWind was a hobby for a number of years It s now turned into we have six employees and we re in St Paul We make a lot of gear and equipment and we go all over the US Through his Kidwind Project Michael is able to teach thousands how to save energy and money This week he s gathered twenty elementary and secondary educators at Minot State University to share lesson plans and experiments Mike-I was a teacher for ten years and the reason we starte I don t typically go out and do stuff with kids cause I know I get 20-30 teachers in the room I can impact about 3-thousand kids cause they each have about 100 kids they re going to work with each year So they are kind of on the front line And if these teachers are able to get students excited about exploring new forms of energy Who knows what could happen JoAnn-What kids are exposed to now and what they can start thinking about you know they re great little problem solvers Put that in your pvc pipe and smoke it Debbie Kuehn KX News The KidWind workshop continues tomorrow
