Mathern on Wages

Energy is one topic Democratic candidate for governor Tim Mathern is also focusing on in his campaign Mathern is conducting forums across the state in the coming weeks to get a better feel for what issues North Dakotans are thinking about He says while energy like wind and oil are doing great things for the state there are still some major concerns Tim Mathern D Candidate for Governor We have 30 000 people with two or more jobs in order to support their family And I believe the high income is a reflection just of a couple smaller sectors of people and we need to make sure that everyone benefits from this economy Mathern will be in Bismarck next week discussing education In all there will be seven forums conducted by the candidate for governor

New Energy Policy Plan

North Dakota has a new plan in place to become a major energy supplier The Empower North Dakota commission made up of forty energy groups has been meeting since last September They have outlined ten areas where the state needs to work on to improve its energy production Some of the areas include increasing the wind generation in the state to fifteen hundred megawatts by 2020 Also build one possibly more clean-coal energy generation plants A big part of the plan is to increase the states export capacity to four thousand megawatts Shane Goettle ND Dept of Commerce The goals set targets for us to define success both in the short term and the long term And there is going to be more discussion on these The recommendations will now go to the legislative interim committee for their consideration

The Future of ND Energy

A group of North Dakota energy leaders is crafting the future of its industry North Dakota is already considered a leader in the energy industry Brad Feldman shows us how some changes could help increase the state s energy production From the traditional sources coal and oil to the newer alternative sources such as wind and ethanol North Dakota is leading the way Gov John Hoeven And that is true that our greatest strength in North Dakota is that we are not just producing one or two types of energy We are producing energy from all sources Governor Hoeven appointed a fourteen member group to look for ways to make North Dakota a bigger player in the energy industry They have met since last September and today the group is presenting its recommendations Shane Goettle ND Dept of Commerce Its about growing all energy segments of our economy That means new jobs for our people it means opportunities for our youth its about growing our state and making our communities stronger The group outlines ten key areas where the state can improve One of them is to build one possibly more clean-coal electric generation plants A plant is already in the planning stages for the South Heart area The group also wants to see four hundred fifty million gallons of ethanol produced in the state by 2011 To date the state already produces one hundred ten million gallons of ethanol This number will double when the Hankinson plant goes on line Another area the group wants to see increased is wind energy They think the state should have the capacity of wind generation of fifteen hundred megawatts by 2020 The state already produces three hundred eighty-five megawatts of wind energy Shane Goettle ND Dept of Commerce The goals set targets for us to define success both in the short term and in the long term Goettle says as each of the goals are met and surpassed they will continue to look at more ways to grow each part of the energy industry in the state Sandi Tabor Lignite Energy Council Our country wants more renewables They want more ways to have access to renewables and were one of the key leaders in providing that energy and so we ll need to figure out how to do it Brad Feldman KX News

Wind Farm Near Center

North Dakota is leading the push for more renewable energy sources Today developers of the Oliver County wind farm near Center are dedicating the fifty-four towers Brad Feldman shows us why this dedication ceremony might just be the beginnig of what s to come Sound-wind It s North Dakota s abundant natural resource This is why Florida Power and Light and Minnesota Power is making a major investment into these gentle giants John Didonato Florida Power amp amp Light By the end of 2008 we will have invested one billion dollars in wind development in the state of North Dakota Wind towers are changing the landscape of North Dakota What once was rolling prairies is now an energy generation station The wind farm near Center produces about one hundred megawatts of energy And plans are in the works to increase this number by as much as ten times John Didonato Florida Power and Light We ve got one hundred thousand acres of land optioned right now So we believe this area can handle another one thousand megawatts of wind and we hope to be the ones to build that F-P-L is working with Minnesota Power to do just that The third phase of this wind farm is already on the drawing board But even before more wind towers go up the two companies will be working on adding transmission lines to allow for the increased energy generated Don Shippar Minnesota Power Minkota is going to add significant more transmission capacity in North Dakota which will then free up capacity in the existing transmission line that goes back to Minnesota Therefore that will allow us to move more wind energy on that line back to northern Minnesota Shippar says he sees a time in the near future when Minnesota Power invests in another four hundred megawatts of wind energy in North Dakota He says its enough energy to serve about a quarter of a million people Not to mention the benefit the additional wind towers would bring to the small communities in the area Brad Feldman KX News Shippar says the next phase of the Oliver County wind farm will likely go near the BNI Mine Site He says right now they are putting up instruments to find the right spots to put up wind towers
